UAD Universal Audio UAD-2 Fatso

August 26th, 2009

Finally the new Empirical Labs Fatso (Tape simulation&Compressor) emulation by Universal Audio has arrived.

Unfortunately it only works with the new UAD-2 cards :(

That’s a bummer.

Well, I was kind of expecting this to happen.

I hope I will still get a decent price for my UAD-1 cards on ebay and also that they are already working on a Distressor emulation.

The end of the loudness war! Dynamic Range

June 25th, 2009

Friedemann Tischmeyer, German mastering engineer and musician, wants to put an end to the “loudness war”.

For the last 3 decades recordings have become more and more compressed.

One of the reasons for this can be found in the fact, that if listened to the same track at a higher volume the track will most likeley sound better to the human ear than at lower volumes.

This has ended in a never ending spiral producing totally over-compressed records which lack dynamic range and are distorted if played in the radio or converted to lossy formats like mp3.

He founded the “Pleasurize Music Foundation“.

Its aim is to:

” … improve the sound quality of music in its various recorded formats – including data compression methods such as MP3 – as well as music destined for radio broadcast…”

This is supposed to be achieved by musicians/producers/engineers who voluntarily refuse to over compress their records/music.

For this reason Tischmeyer also released a VST Plugin called “TT Dynamic Range Meter” which can be used as a reference during mixing/mastering.

A similar approach has also been made by Bob Katz some time ago when he promoted the K-Metering System.

Let’s hope that he/we will succeed in bringing back “life” to the music.

If one wants loud music we should use the volume control.
